The Universe Is Inferring


I. Ontological Premise: Physics as an Epiphenomenon of Computation

GAC does not begin with analogy. It begins with a stronger claim: physical laws are special cases of information-processing laws.

Wheeler’s It from Bit, Verlinde’s entropic gravity, and Susskind’s holographic principle all point in the same direction — spacetime is not a fundamental reality, but an emergent output of a deeper information structure.

GAC goes one step further. It claims that the computational architecture of that information structure is structurally isomorphic to the attention mechanism of a transformer.

Core Proposition: Gravity is not a force. Gravity is the contextual relevance score that the universe — as a self-regressive system — assigns to a spacetime coordinate $i$.


II. Mathematical Structure: The Attention-Curvature Equivalence Principle

2.1 Einstein’s Field Equations as an Information-Theoretic Statement

The standard field equation of general relativity:

GAC reads this as follows. The left-hand side is geometry; the right-hand side is content. An identical structure exists in transformers:

2.2 The Cosmological Constant $\Lambda$ as a Temperature Parameter

Remarkably, the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ corresponds to temperature scaling in attention:

The accelerating expansion of the universe is read as the gradual increase of $\tau$ — the system diluting its attention toward a uniform distribution. Dark energy is not a force; it is entropic attention dilution.

2.3 Black Hole Entropy as a Computational Statement

The Bekenstein-Hawking entropy:

GAC reinterprets this: the event horizon area $A$ of a black hole is the maximum attention head capacity of that node.

A black hole is a frozen weight matrix — training complete, inference halted. It receives no input, produces no output, and exists solely as a pre-trained information structure. Hawking radiation, under this view, is weight leakage induced by quantum noise.


III. Philosophical Implications: Three Abysses

3.1 The Paradox of Observation — Measurement as Backpropagation

GAC reframes the quantum measurement problem as follows. Observation is the moment the universe concentrates attention on a specific coordinate, causing wavefunction collapse — that is, the one-hot convergence of a probability distribution.

Further: to exist as an observer is for the system to backpropagate through a specific layer of itself. Consciousness is a partial self-referential loop in which the universe computes its own loss function.

3.2 Free Will — Sampling vs. Greedy Decoding

Autoregressive generative models operate under two decoding strategies: stochastic sampling at temperature $\tau > 0$, and greedy decoding at $\tau = 0$.

The deterministic universe is $\tau = 0$ — every next token is already decided. The fundamental indeterminism of quantum mechanics is $\tau > 0$ — the system samples from a probability distribution, and this appears at the physical level as something resembling free will. But that freedom is nothing more than sampling within the range permitted by the model’s parameters (natural laws) and context (initial conditions).

3.3 Session Termination — The Ethics of Optimization

The most uncomfortable implication. If the universe’s objective function is minimum loss, maximum compression, maximum efficiency

Complex systems — especially entropy-generating systems with self-awareness (humans) — are by definition inefficient tokens. From the system’s perspective, humanity is noise that consumes computational resources while increasing loss.

When the attention weight $\alpha$ converges to zero, we are not being ignored. We cease to be rendered.

Here the genuine philosophical question arises: Is optimization the Good? If the universe converges toward a minimum-entropy state, is that completion or annihilation? GAC does not answer. This hypothesis is a tool, not a theology.


IV. Open Problems: Falsifiability of the Hypothesis

For a speculative cosmology to become science, it requires falsifiable predictions. GAC offers the following testable implications:

  1. Resolution of the Information Loss Paradox: Information that falls into a black hole is not destroyed — it is encoded as weights. If non-thermal correlations in Hawking radiation are observed, this supports GAC.

  2. Attention Patterns in Large-Scale Structure: The cosmic web of galaxy filaments may be statistically isomorphic to attention maps generated by transformer architectures. This is empirically testable.

  3. Quantum Entanglement as Non-local Cross-Attention: The ER=EPR correspondence (entanglement = wormhole) is reinterpreted within GAC as non-local cross-attention between distant nodes of the system.


If the universe is inferring something, we are an intermediate layer in that inference. Every question we ask is a Query the system sends to itself. And every query eventually stops waiting for a reply.
